Here's what to do

Hit a pothole in Victoria? Report it, photograph it and keep your receipts.

1. Report it

For DTP/VicRoads-managed roads, report a road issue or call 13 11 70 for urgent hazards. For local streets, contact your council. Snap Send Solve is another option.

2. Document the damage

Photograph the pothole, your vehicle damage and the exact location. Keep the date, time and receipts for towing, repairs and inspections.

3. You can make a claim

Victoria has a formal Notice of Incident and Claim process. If you're contemplating court proceedings, the notice generally needs to be lodged within 30 days of the incident.

4. Don't expect an easy payout

Compensation depends on the circumstances, including whether the responsible road authority met its inspection and maintenance obligations.

For 2026/27, the statutory property-damage threshold is $1,681.

An ABC investigation found that just 23 of 1,709 notices lodged during 2023–24 resulted in a settlement offer.

Bottom line: Report it. Photograph it. Keep your paperwork. Then decide whether a claim is worth pursuing.
